A journey with Hurtigruten is a feast for all the senses. As we sail the length of Norway’s coast, the landscapes outside your window are mirrored on your plate. We source directly from around 70 local farms, fisheries and bakeries, bringing the coast’s freshest flavors on board in through Norway's Coastal Kitchen.
Relish melt-in-your-mouth cod from Vesterålen, award-winning cheeses from Lofoten and brews from Bergen. Every dish tells a story of place, season and tradition. This is cuisine that connects you to the land and its people – a true taste of Norway.

Our onboard restaurants
In general, each of our ships has a main restaurant, a bistro-style eatery, and a fine-dining à la carte restaurant, all true to our food concept of authentic local cuisine.
Dining rooms typically have floor-to-ceiling windows so you can enjoy views of the fjords while you dine, connecting you to the very places where our ingredients are sourced.

Towards zero food waste
We place food waste from our fleet into a specially designed compost reactor in the port of Stamsund in the Lofoten islands.
Nearby Myklevik farm uses this fertilizer to grow new food for Norway and for our ships. It’s a simple, natural way to help local farmers and to keep our food waste as low as possible.

Norway
Our cruises along the Norwegian coast rightly earn their place in the hall of fame of iconic traveller routes, along with other classics like the Orient Express, Europe’s Danube, and the revered Route 66. After all, The Coastal Express is known as "The World's Most Beautiful Voyage" for a reason.
No matter the season, our Norwegian cruises offer thrilling adventures filled with amazing scenery and active experiences.

Svalbard
Sprawling glaciers, jagged mountain formations and scenic fjords – Svalbard showcases Arctic beauty in all its rugged, pristine splendour. Located halfway between Norway and the North Pole, this remote archipelago is a truly wild experience.
And as Svalbard travel experts, there is no better way to experience this beautiful destination than on a Hurtigruten cruise.
Sustainability

Hurtigruten is committed to shaping the future of travel and supporting Norway’s ambition to become the world’s most sustainable destination.
While we recognize that true sustainability is an ongoing journey, we are taking concrete steps through ship development, fleet upgrades and waste reduction. By continuously improving and embracing innovation, we aim to set new standards for more responsible and environmentally conscious tourism.
Our sustainability credentials:
-
Certified biofuels From carefully selected sustainable sources
-
Minimized energy use Through new propeller blades, new bulbous bow, new gears, and new control systems
-
Streamlined hulls That optimize inertia and reduce drag when sailing
-
State-of-the-art wastewater treatment Systems to limit emissions to sea
-
Reducing waste while supporting local farmers We compost food waste from our fleet in Stamsund, providing fertiliser for Myklevik farm to grow fresh produce for our ships - reducing waste while supporting local farmers.
-
Shore-power connectivity That allows all ships to ‘plug in’ to electricity when docked in port, reducing emissions when shore power is available.
Sea Zero
Today, we are embarking on our most ambitious sustainability project in our 130-year history. We aim to develop a ship that can operate with zero emissions in normal operations on the Norwegian coast by 2030.
In partnership with SINTEF, one of Europe's largest independent research organisations and several key maritime players from Norway, the Sea Zero initiative explores cutting-edge solutions in energy efficiency and battery electric power.

This initiative builds on our ongoing efforts to enhance sustainability, including an approximately $108 million investment in ship upgrades to our existing fleet. By 2025, these upgrades aim to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 25% and NOₓ emissions by 80%, with four ships being converted to hybrid electric power.
The Sea Zero project is currently in the research and development phase, focusing on battery production, propulsion technology, hull design and sustainable practices to minimize energy use. The goal is to achieve a 50% energy reduction compared with current ships, paving the way to be operational by 2030.
Key upgrades to our fleet
We are in the process of undertaking one of Europe’s largest ship upgrade projects to make our fleet more sustainable. Our aim is to significantly reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency, by converting four ships to run on hybrid-electric power.
Emission Reductions
-
Targeting a 25% reduction in CO₂ emissions and 80% reduction in NOₓ emissions
-
Phasing in certified biofuels to lower environmental impact
Hybrid-Powered Ships
-
Upgrading three ships to hybrid-electric power for quieter and cleaner operations
-
Installing large battery packs and energy-efficient engines
Shore Power Connectivity
-
All ships now connect to shore power when docked, eliminating emissions in ports with shore power availability
Plastic-Free and Waste Reduction Measures
-
Eliminating unnecessary single-use plastics across the fleet
-
Implementing advanced waste management systems to reduce pollution
Energy Efficiency Improvements
-
Optimized hull design to reduce drag and improve fuel efficiency
-
Modernized wastewater treatment systems to minimize environmental impact
Towards Zero Food Waste
We are committed to minimizing food waste through our "Towards Zero Food Waste" initiative, which emphasizes a circular approach to food consumption and waste management.
This program is part of our Norway's Coastal Kitchen concept, which focuses on the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
-
Reduce: Chefs prepare smaller portion sizes to minimize leftovers
-
Reuse: Leftover food is repurposed creatively in new dishes
-
Recycle: Unavoidable food waste is transformed into fertilizer
The recycling process involves collecting food waste on board and processing it in a compost reactor at the port of Stamsund. Within 24 hours, microbes convert the waste into nutrient-rich fertilizer, which is then used at Myklevik farm to cultivate fresh produce. This produce returns to our ships, completing the sustainable cycle.
We plan to expand this model to other regions in Norway, aiming to inspire broader adoption of sustainable practices and contribute to the preservation of the Norwegian coastline.
Why Hurtigruten?
Cruise-line information, not a ship-specific guarantee. Confirm venues and inclusions for your ship and sailing.
At Hurtigruten, we give you the opportunity to travel with meaning. Our expert knowledge of the coast, combined with highly skilled crews and a diverse fleet of nimble, intimately scaled ships, enables us to offer you experience the best that our home has to offer.
From expert knowledge to world-class food, here's why you should go on a Norwegian cruise with Hurtigruten.

1. We are not your normal cruise line
You won’t find waterslides, casinos, or a strict dress code on a Hurtigruten cruise ship. Instead, you’ll enjoy an intimate and easy-going atmosphere, where you can relax, recharge, and take in the beauty of the Norwegian fjords.

2. Nobody knows the Norwegian coast better
Since our first sailing in 1893, you’ve trusted us to take you to the intimate places of the Norwegian coast; secret fjords, myth-inspiring mountains, hidden hamlets, and majestic waterfalls. We’ve crossed the Arctic Circle under the glow of summer’s Midnight Sun and shown you the Northern Lights at the North Cape, for the first time or the hundredth time.

3. You're in good hands
While sailing along a Hurtigruten cruise, you will be accompanied by an expert Coastal Experience Team. Using their hands-on experience of Norway, they have one mission: to enhance your voyage by offering engaging insights on the nature, wildlife, and culture you encounter along the way.

4. We have a Northern Lights Promise
A Hurtigruten cruise is one of the best ways to the aurora borealis. And we're so sure you'll see them during your time on board, that we make you a promise no-one can match. If the Northern Lights do not appear on your voyage of 11 days or more, we will give you another 6- or 7-day Coastal Express trip FREE OF CHARGE.

5. Our food showcases Norway's finest
On a voyage with us you won’t just see the Norwegian coast; you’ll taste it too. As we sail its length, we pick from its pantry, sourcing the finest homegrown produce from the ports we visit, for you to enjoy in our onboard restaurants.

6. Our ships are built to enjoy the view
Whether from the comfort of your cabin, in our panoramic observation lounge, or in a hot tub on deck. And with fewer than 500 guests on board, it's easy to find a peaceful spot to soak up the scenery.

7. We work with on-the-ground experts
We partner with local suppliers to offer you a truly authentic experience with every shore excursion. Each has a wealth of knowledge about their local area, and they’re passionate about sharing their expertise and unique offerings with visitors like you.

8. We are committed to sustainable travel
Channelling the same pioneering spirit as our first voyage in 1893, we are embarking on a journey to build our first fully zero-emission ship by 2030. We are also working to improve the efficiency of our entire fleet, cutting CO2 emissions by 25% and NOx by 80%.
